Marine plywood update 2023
We are currently stocking 4x8 sheets of 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 ‘’ BS1088 Hydrotek Meranti marine plywood for structural and decorative marine and exterior uses. BS1088 (British Standard1088) is an internationally recognized standard that specifies the quality of each layer of the core and the faces of the veneers. BS1088 grade specs a sheet of plywood where each layer is one sheet of unpatched veneer, making a sheet that is almost completely free of internal voids. Additionally, the waterproof glues used are spec’d to help prevent delamination/fungal attacks that occurs in the high moisture conditions of exterior and marine environments.
We also carry 1/2 and 3/4 domestic AB fir marine. Although the cores and face veneer are fir and are not made to the same high specifications as BS1088, AB fir is used in many less demanding marine or exterior applications.
Please note that although marine plywoods are manufactured for exterior use they are still a wood product requiring proper installation and finishing. For best longevity all cut edges of ply should be fully sealed before all surfaces are coated with several coats of high grade marine paint or varnish. Pittsford Lumber is a Gougeon West system epoxy dealer; we have sold and worked with West System for more than 25 years. We stock most of the Gougeon line and can easily order in any other products we do not have on the shelf. We have chosen to carry the Epifanes line of marine varnishes as they consistently outperform other exterior coatings. Epifanes flagship varnish is a true long resin oil based marine varnish and proper application provides a coating with the elasticity needed to hold up to the extreme effects of UV and high humidity on wood. The finish is easily maintained with a scuff sanding and recoating.
